The Certificate IV in Building and Construction is the step up from trade to management. It is the qualification for builders, site supervisors, construction managers and estimators — people who need to apply the National Construction Code, read and prepare plans, plan and cost projects, manage site safety and supervise building work across Class 1 and 10 (residential) and Class 2 to 9 Type C (commercial) constructions. Course structure

The CPC40120 comprises 19 units of competency — 11 core units and 8 elective units — delivered face-to-face across 52 weeks with a minimum of 20 contact hours per week. The elective selection reflects the Building specialisation pathway, covering cost estimation, contract administration, materials procurement, labour scheduling, energy efficiency, project quality management and approvals processes. This gives graduates the practical management skills for the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) outcome.

How you’ll be assessed

Assessment is competency-based — you are assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent. No grades are awarded.

• A — Written assessments and knowledge tests — Theory assessments covering the National Construction Code, structural principles, WHS legislation, legal requirements, contract law, estimating methodology and planning processes.
• B — Case studies and applied projects — Real-world construction scenarios used to assess your ability to estimate project costs, prepare contract documents, plan build sequences, arrange approvals and produce labour and materials schedules.
• C — Research reports and business documents — Business plan research (BSBESB401), project quality management reports (BSBPMG422), energy efficiency analysis (CPCSUS4002) — assessed through structured written submissions.
• D — Practical skills assessment — Site surveys, set-out calculations, plan sketching and interpretation assessed through hands-on tasks and scenario-based problem solving.

Resources & facilities

The Certificate IV is classroom-delivered with a strong applied learning focus. Students have access to professional classrooms with internet connectivity, digital and print access to the National Construction Code, Australian Standards, planning documents and contract templates. Measurement and plan-reading exercises are conducted in the classroom and on-campus. Students are required to have access to a laptop for research and report preparation tasks. Both Melbourne and Brisbane campuses deliver the same program.

The Certificate IV is delivered in a professional classroom environment designed to simulate a construction management context. You’ll have access to the National Construction Code, Australian Standards, planning and permit documentation, standard form construction contracts and estimating templates. Classes run in small cohorts to allow detailed discussion and peer learning — your classmates come from different trade and construction backgrounds, and that diversity of experience is itself a valuable part of the course. Both Melbourne and Brisbane campuses deliver the same program to the same standard.

Recognition of prior learning & credit transfer

RPL is available for students with prior trade experience, site supervision experience or construction management experience. Applicants must demonstrate their existing skills and knowledge against the relevant unit performance criteria through evidence gathering (site records, project documents, references, employer statements). Licensing & regulatory information

The Certificate IV in Building and Construction is the minimum educational requirement for Builder and Domestic Builder licensing in most Australian states and territories, however additional requirements may apply:

• Victoria: Domestic Builder (Limited) — DB-L — or Domestic Builder (Unlimited) — DB-U — under the Building Act 1993 via the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). The CPC40120 meets the educational component; insurance, supervisor experience and a finance test are also required.
• Queensland: Builder’s licence under the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) Act. The CPC40120 meets the educational requirement; financial, insurance and experience requirements also apply.
• New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, NT, ACT: licensing requirements vary — check with the relevant state authority.
• Site Supervisor: in Victoria, site supervisor registration under the VBA requires the CPC40120 (or equivalent) plus relevant experience.
